Sivaji silver jubilee function on Jan 11
The excitement and buzz that has surrounded Sivaji simply refuses to die. Tamil cinema’s biggest blockbuster yet will celebrate 200 days on January 11. And to commemorate the glorious occasion, AVM Productions, which produced the mega hit, is organising a grand function on the same day.
The function, to be held at the Madras University, will have none other than the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi as the chief guest.
Sivaji is the 100th Tamil film of Rajnikanth in which the superstar teamed up with the director with the Midas touch, Shankar, Tamil cinema’s most prestigious production house AVM and music maestro A.R. Rahman. The dream team exceeded the expectations of everyone by coming up with a spectacular film.
The film had a stupendous run at theatres all over India and even outside India. The film went on to become the first Tamil film ever to break into the UK Top 10, beating bigger Hollywood films like Fantastic 4 and Oceans 13.
As part of the silver jubilee celebrations, a short film on the making of Sivaji will be released which is sure to delight the audience. An added bonus is that the Sivaji team is planning to screen scenes that were edited out at the editing table..
The cast and crew who put in their very best to make this film a roaring success will be honoured with mementos during the occasion.

From buying the first audio release, to listening to his music all day long, it’s after a long time that I sit to rethink and share my thoughts on the wizard, who weaves spells through his music. |
The name needs no introduction. It stands for melody, energy – a heady mix of modern and traditional form of music. It also symbolises the man who has stirred emotions of love, patriotism, and many unspoken feelings by his music. A tech-savvy musician, who mixes charms of musical notes with technology to create a new genre of listeners. A man who has gained international acclaims yet remains humble, truthful, with an air of innocence. Born A S Dileep Kumar, A R Rahman turns 42-year-old today. Birth and personal life Dileep was born in Chennai to Late R K Shekhar and Kasturi (now Kareema Begum). He was introduced to music at an early age and in a short span of time became the best-selling recording artiste ever surpassing Elvis, Beatles and Jackson. Being second among the 4 children, Rahman has three sisters, Rehana (Kanchana), Fatima Talat (Bala) and Israth. At the age of 29, Rahman had an arranged marriage to the beautiful, demure Kutchi speaking wife, Saira in 1995. They have three children, two daughters namely Khatija and Raheema and a son –Rumi.  Early yearsLife is drama – true in the case of young Dileep, who lost his father while he was just nine years old. He became the sole breadwinner of his family by playing instruments in bands and lending the musical instruments owned by his father to various troops. A school dropout, this little precocious child soon became a touring tyro musician with tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and various other orchestras. Dileep converted to Islam at the age of 20. “My dad went through a lot of problems. He was sick and my childhood was a disaster… I spent most of my childhood in hospitals. There came a stage when the family was almost down. We met a pir sahab at that time. It is inexplicable. It just happened. My idea of God coincided with all this.” Dileep became Allah Rakha Rahman, his mother Kasturi is now Kareema Begum. “Okay, this was something that was bound to happen”, he says. Soon, Rahman left his home to study music at Trinity College of Music, Oxford University. With a degree in Western Classical Music, he returned to Madras to join an Ad agency in 1987. He wrote some 300 jingles for radio and TV commercials – winning several industry awards. He also released his first album of Muslim devotional songs, titled Deen Isai Malai and the English album, Set Me Free. Both went unnoticed in the market. Rising from ‘Roja’ The maestro’s debut in the film industry came in 1992 at the age of 26. Director Mani Ratnam, approached Rahman to compose the score and soundtrack for Tamil film Roja. The music broke all the records and went on to become Time’s top ten music tracks of all time. It also fetched him first National Film Award for best music direction, an award that was given for the first time to a debutante music director. The success of Roja was followed by Tamil movies like Bombay (dubbed in Hindi), Kadhalan, Indira, Minsaara Kanavu, Muthu and Love Birds, which gained him accolades even from non-Tamil fans who swayed to the freshness of tracks and cared little about the literals. Rahman’s versatility in classical, folk, jazz, reggae, soft rock and other styles in his pieces soon made him stand out in the dull Hindi cinema which still used the quintessential ‘dholak’ for the ‘taal’ and was also reluctant to experiment with new technologies. It was maverick director Ram Gopal Varma’s movie Rangeela, which gave Rahman his first break in Bollywood in 1995. Though the movie failed to create waves at box-office, people danced and hummed to the tunes of famous title tracks – ‘Rangeela Re’ and ‘Tanha Tanha’. The film later went on to become Rahman's biggest hit and the most original score of that year. A true experimentalist Rahman has many a hit movie scores, some were even re-made in other languages. His prowess in South film industry is unparalleled. But his music score in Hindi films like ‘Bombay’, ‘Rangeela’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Lagaan’, ‘Yuva’, Saathiya’ and ‘Rang De Basanti’ are timeless. For each time you listen to a ‘Tu Hi Re’, ‘Ae Nazneen Suno Na’, ‘Rangeela Re’, ‘Mitwa’, ‘Humdum Suniyo Re’, ‘Khuda Hafiz’, ‘Paathshaala’ or ‘Rubaru’ it seems as if you heard a new beat or a new note, which was not heard last time. Unlike other music directors, Rahman’s uncertainty of many a factor about his music makes his every releases worth the wait. He has tested the limits of playback singers and moulded them accordingly, even the untrained ones. Rahman had established singers like Asha Bhosle convey that titillating effect in ‘Tanha Tanha’ and brought out the warmth of Chitra’s voice in ‘Kehna Hi Kya’ from Bombay. The song ‘Jiya Jale’ from the movie Dil Se, sung by ageing Lata Mangeshkar expressed restlessness and angst. The exuberance of Sukhwinder Singh’s voice in Chaiyya Chaiyya sets the parties rolling even after completing a decade of its release. Rahman himself sang the new version of Vande Matram with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1997, marking the 50th year of Indian independence. Rahman-Ratnam combo Rahman who has worked with Mani Ratnam in at least nine movies – Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Bombay, Iruvar/Iddaru, Dil Se, Alaipayuthey/Sakhi/Sathiya, Kannathil Muthamittal/ Amrutha, Ayutha Ezhuthu/Yuva, Guru; has always given chart topping numbers. The strength of the music of Dil Se made it the first Asian film to enter the UK Top 10. “Every time we work together it is like our first film. We understand each other perfectly”, Ratnam quips. Music is life An otherwise shy Rahman lives, eats and sleeps music. The wizard who has made a record sale of 200 million cassettes worldwide is not bothered about the quantity, but the quality and the satisfaction that he derives out of his work. Rahman’s personal studio, Panchathan Record Inn, which he started in 1989, was the centre of his learning and experimentation with different kinds of sounds. The studio was put out of use in 2005, after which he shifted to his new studio named as A M Studio. The new studio is considered to be the most developed, equipped and high tech studio of Asia. Rahman also launched his own music label, KM Musiq in 2006. Known for recording at night, when the world sleeps, he is dedicated yet doesn’t fuss like other music directors. Rahman takes his own sweet time to compose songs and prefers recording in his Madras studio, which is a major hassle for Bollywood producers. Nevertheless the results are worth the trouble. The people who have worked with the genius have all praises for his sheer genius. Vairamuthu, the lyricist, with whom Rahman shares a special bond, said, "Rahman has some God given gift in him. He is like a rare pearl in ocean of music. When one composes a song he is always worried as to whether the song will click or not. But Rahman is one composer who does not care about the commercial success of the song. He is always confident that if a number is composed with a good heart and self-confidence it will be a big hit.” From Bollywood to Broadway The maestro, who has created many an unending spells, holds a special place in the hearts of music aficionados across the world. Rahman got international acclaim in 2002, when he composed his maiden stage production Bombay Dreams, produced by Andrew Llyod Weber. He also composed the music for The Lord of the Rings theatre production along with the Finnish folk music band Värttinä. He has composed the piece "Raga's Dance" for Vanessa Mae's album Choreography. Rahman also composed the score for the Chinese film Warriors of Heaven and Earth in 2003. He composed the music of Shekhar Kapur’s sequel to Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) alongwith Craig Armstrong. Taking time out from his hectic lifestyle, Rahman has set up the ‘A R Rahman Foundation’ to eradicate poverty. This includes setting up and partnering with educational institutions across India to provide education to children who do not have easy access to schools or funds. Awards and Recognitions With a career spanning 16 years, Rahman has nearly 100 movies to his credit as a music director. He was conferred Padma Shri in the year 2000. Looking forward to the best of Bollywood in 2008
JODHAA AKBAR

Oscar nominated director Ashutosh Gowariker’s latest is the most awaited, much delayed and probably the biggest film of 2008.
Bollywood’s hottest on-screen couple are back in action! Super hero Hrithik Roshan and reigning diva Aishwarya Rai created controversy after their infamous smooch in 2006’s blockbuster, Dhoom 2. Their latest release, Jodhaa Akbar, is unlikely to create such a furore from India’s moral police as it is a historical period romance.
Set in the 16th century, it tells the alleged true love story between the great Mughal Emperor Akbar (Roshan) and his marriage of convenience to Jodhaa (Rai), a Hindu Rajput princess, in order to expand his control over the Rajput Empire. The fiery Jodhaa resents being a mere political pawn in her husband’s life. Akbar faces his biggest battle: winning the love of his wife.
From the rushes seen at last year’s Cannes film festival where the film was ‘introduced’, it appears that Gowariker is attempting to recreate a ‘Mughal-e-Azam’-style epic with sumptuous sets, huge battle scenes using hundreds of real horses and elephants, AR Rahman’s music and two of Bollywood’s biggest stars.
It remains to be seen whether this will translate into box-office gold. Bollywood audiences today appear indifferent to historical films. Both Aamir Khan’s The Rising about India’s so-called first war of independence and Akbar Khan’s Taj Mahal failed recently at the box office.
Additionally, audiences may not warm to the idea of seeing their usually shirtless hero Roshan fully clothed in robes with long hair and sporting a moustache. Rai’s magic may be on the wane. She dons her trademark doe-eyed look yet again so faithful fans will not be disappointed. But this is her first proper release since her marriage: Indian audiences find it problematic to engage on screen with someone else’s wife.
Set for release on February 15 2008.

A Hindi remake of the similarly titled Tamil blockbuster, which is actually a remake of the Christopher Noolan memory loss Hollywood film, Memento. After Shah Rukh Khan, it is Aamir Khan’s turn to sport a six-pack as the hunky amnesiac in search of the man who murdered his wife.

‘Jodha Akbar’, a Bollywood movie, which many were waiting and were being thought to be ‘the big one’ in this year’s start will be on theatres in April. Media reports point out that Ashutosh Gowarikar, Director of the film has been advised three weeks bed rest.
The movie is based on a 16th century story between the Mughal emperor Akbar, played by Hrithik Roshan and Hindu princess Jodha Bai, played by Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai. The film has been directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and has musical score from A.R. Rahman. Hrithik Roshan who had several blockbuster successes earlier like "Krrish," and "Dhoom 2", will like to take his path of success forward in this year with this movie. Hrithik as Akbar in the film will be seen wearing a lot of heavy jewelry and armour to showcase the royalty of the 16th century.
Kiran Deohans, the ad maker and with ‘Quayamat Se Quayamat Tak’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi…’ fame is the lensman of the movie. In fact after shooting QSQT in 1988, Kiran took a ten year break before shooting another film- Karan Johar''s Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and now will be showcasing his talent in this movie. Though the official date of the release was February 15 but may be now slipping down to April.

Robot could well be the jewel in their crown. After the stupendous success – box-office-wise and hype-wise – of Sivaji The Boss, the Shankar-Rajinikanth-A.R. CNN-IBN's To Catch a Star returns
CNN-IBN's popular celebrity talk show To Catch a Star returns from 19 January. Especially, when the project brings together professionals like Aamir Khan and A.R. Rahman. The original Tamil film 'Ghajini' had chartbuster tracks by Harris Jayaraj (who till date is known for his excellent score in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein.) Though Rahman has stepped in for the Hindi version, no one has doubts around the eventual product that would be up for grabs this year.

Why Hrithik Roshan chooses difficult roles
There is a reason as to why Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan chooses difficult roles such as the Mughal emperor in the new historical romance Jodhaa Akbar opposite the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai .
The reason is that difficult roles challenge Hrithik to excel as an actor.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar , ‘Jodhaa Akbar’, scheduled to release on February 15, is based on a 16th century romance between the Mughal emperor Akbar and Hindu princess Jodha Bai, played by Ash.
``I really want to do films that scare me so much that I won't be able to afford it if they don't fare well,'' Hrithik said in an interview.
``It is only when it seems to threaten the value of my job would I be consciously giving it my best,'' Hrithik said.
But Hrithik said what he loathed most playing Akbar was wearing a lot of heavy jewelry and armor. He said it was awkward to wear earrings and chunky necklaces that were needed to reflect the royalty of the 16th century.
``How will you fight when you cannot even stand up? What if you fall with all that weight on you?'' Hrithik asked.
The shooting of Jodhaa Akbar concluded in November last year with a lavish song.
The elaborate song was shot for about 13 days at Nitin Desai’s studios in Karjat.
Titled “Azeem O Shah, Shahenshah”, the song featured about one thousand dancers in traditional costumes, wielding swords and shields.

``How will you fight when you cannot even stand up? What if you fall with all that weight on you?'' Hrithik asked.
The shooting of Jodhaa Akbar concluded in November last year with a lavish song.
The elaborate song was shot for about 13 days at Nitin Desai’s studios in Karjat.
Titled “Azeem O Shah, Shahenshah”, the song featured about one thousand dancers in traditional costumes, wielding swords and shields.

Meet the lensman who captured Jodha Akhbar ’s beauty
He is a lensman who captured the refreshing Quayamat Se Quayamat Tak, the opulent Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001 and now Kiran Deohans or KD as he is fondly called, is adding finishing touches to the royal Jodha Akbar.
Working in between on ad films, Kiran is both excited and nervous about the magnum opus.
"We have to keep references as realistic. Like for light, in the day we had daylight and at night, torches. So we were limited by those factors there. Yet we still kept the dramatisation intact, within the realistic prism,” says Kiran.
So what does he have to tell about co-stars of the film, Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan?
"They both are such good looking people, that we had to maintain their beauty throughout the film and yet, keep them in character,” Kiran says.
After shooting QSQT in 1988, Kiran took a ten year break before shooting another film- Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
But he did shoot as many as 300 ad films in between, simply because the ad world paid him more and constantly challenged him.
In a career spanning almost two decades surprisingly Kiran has just a handful of feature films to his credit.

Aamir to take 6 months break
Aamir Khan has finally made what he always wanted to make it... movies. Though his directorial venture Taare Zameen Par wasn't a planned move from his side, he says, he's glad that he took the step with 'TZP'. "Though I took over the film from the original director Amod after a week, it was not an impulsive decision from my side. I thought over it for a day and decided to make the film myself, because I didn't want to delay the project by handing it over to a another director as it would have delay the process and in the meanwhile the kid would have grown up," he says. And what's next for him. "My next film Ghajini is almost complete and after I will take a 6 months break.

'Jodhaa Akbar' release postponed yet again!
The release of Ashutosh Gowarikar's period drama Jodhaa Akbar has been pushed back for the third time, from February 24 to some time in April, because Gowarikar is down with a bad back and has been advised two months of bed rest.
The film was originally slotted to hit the marquee on October 23, 2007 but its release date was pushed back to January 25 to absorb a schedule overrun during filming.
Delays in post production of the film and composition of its musical score by AR Rahman led to the release date being pushed back for the second time to February 24.
At the time of the second postponement it was reported that Gowarikar has been advised 3 weeks bed rest. It is now being reported that he could be off work for 2 months.
Ashutosh laments his bad back saying, "I am sad that this had to happen in the thick of post production; it is unfortunate, but it has to be dealt with."
One of the challenges being faced in post production is the length of the film. There is enough footage for a five-and-a-half hour run and all of it has been shot at considerable cost and labor.
Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan are known to have put their heart and soul into the making of the film and trimming it down to 3 hours will be heart wrenching for them.
According to HT, the repeated delays are causing discontent amongst cast and crew members because their work engagement is being extended over longer periods than originally envisaged without enhanced compensation.
Musical score for the film is scheduled to be released on January 9 under film producer UTV's new record label UTV Music.
Production cost for the film is believed to have gone well past the Rs 50 crore mark, raising hackles with UTV who are bankrolling much of the project.

This week Mission Ustaad spread the message for "Upliftment of Women". All the four Jodi's gave brilliant performances with inspiring messages and incidents from their personal life to the world. Though the message was inspiring, their songs were not. It has been pointed out by the judges many times that the songs chosen must fit the subject.But seems the Jodi's are lacking the knowledge of songs available in our music industry, or is it that they are choosing songs that are popular so they can attract the audience for votes? It is now high time A.R. Rahman gives out his views on the songs performed. If only one judge speaks out and the others do not express their views, then how can the audience give the correct results?

Bollywood movie star Hrithik Roshan says he deliberately chooses difficult roles such as the Mongol emperor in the new historical romance "Jodha Akbar" because they challenge him to excel as an actor.
"Jodha Akbar," scheduled to debut later this month, is based on a 16th century romance between the emperor and Hindu princess Jodha Bai, played by Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai.
"I really want to do films that scare me so much that I won't be able to afford it if they don't fare well," Roshan said in an interview in the latest issue of Cine Blitz magazine on Wednesday.
"It is only when it seems to threaten the value of my job would I be consciously giving it my best," he said.
But Roshan said what he loathed most playing Akbar was wearing a lot of heavy jewelry and armor. He said it was awkward to wear earrings and chunky necklaces that were needed to reflect the royalty of the 16th century.

Ash snubbed!
Aishwarya Rai Bhachchan is eagerly anticipating the release of her next movie, the much-awaited Jodha Akbar opposite her Dhoom 2 pair Hrithik Roshan. This epic film, directed by Ahutosh Gowariker and touted to be the most expensive Indian film ever made in the recent times, is in the final stages of postproduction.
The latest news on this film is that its length, in all probability, will be around three and a half hours. Considering the fact that Ashutosh’s earlier movies Lagan and Swades were about as lengthy, if not lengthier, this is not something new. It was very recently reported that the director had chopped off a Qawali number that was lavishly picturised on Aishwarya as it was hampering the pace of the movie. Ash was so much in love with the song and the visuals that she had asked the director’s permission to use it in her next movie. But sources now have it that her request was turned down by Ashutosh as he had only half-heartedly edited it out of the movie. However, he intends releasing it in the DVD of the movie. Jodha Akbar may be one of the potential movies for the Oscars. It seems that Ashutosh has been carefully observing the trend of the movies going for the Oscars. While films like Lagaan and Paheli had the cultural touch of India, Rang De Basanti had the spirit of nationalism instilled in it. The movie’s storyline in the trailers depicts both these elements in plenty.
But Ashutosh, who has been acclaimed for his originality, has inspired himself from movies like ‘Troy’ and ‘Lord Of The Rings’, which have been nominated for the Oscars before. The purdah scene between Hrithik and Aishwarya also seem to have been inspired from a short film ‘Migration’, featuring Sameera Reddy and Shiney Ahuja, where Shiney approaches Sameera but she drops a curtain between them.
A scene showcasing Aishwarya lifting her ghunghat looks similar to a scene in Paheli, where Rani flaunts the same look. Even the colour of the outfit is the same. Aishwarya’s red coloured outfit has sharp resemblance to the clothes worn by Rani in the movie.
The movie release, which was scheduled for January 25, has been delayed due to the fact that he has been advised bed rest for 21 days due a severe back problem, which has delayed the finishing of the background score of the movie.
All in all, Ashutosh is trying his best to mix all spices in a balanced proportion so as to make an impact on the audience. 'Jodha Akbar' in Tamil, Telugu
While on UTV, their next venture JODHA AKBAR, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, will be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu languages. That’s not all, UTV has plans of releasing the two versions extensively in these two markets.
UTV’s current plans are to release the magnum opus in 1,000 + screens in the domestic market in the three languages [Hindi, Tamil, Telugu]. “Don’t be surprised if the number of screens touch 1,200,” Suniel Wadhwa, Associate Vice President - India Distribution, UTV informs me. The breakdown [as on this date] is as follows:- Hindi version 750, Telugu version 150 and Tamil version 100 screens. Incidentally, Hrithik Roshan’s previous movies, DHOOM 2 and KRRISH, were also dubbed in Telugu and Tamil languages.

Their next project, Swades, though well received by critics did not find acceptance among the masses. But one aspect of the film that was appreciated by one and all was it’s music, with Rahman’s ‘Yeh Jo Des…’ going on to become one of his best compositions till date.
Ashutosh’s latest venture, Jodhaa Akbar, featuring Hrithik Roshan as the Mughal emperor Akbar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as his love interest Jodha, a Rajput princess, also has Rahman composing the music.
