Rahman: will he get what he deserves?

Danny Boyle’s directorial venture Slum dog Millionaire and its music have created ripples all over the world by bagging four Golden Globe nominations. The film has been nominated under four categories and Rahman’s music has come in for praise..

The following are the four categories: best film, best director (Danny Boyle), best original score (A.R. Rahman) and best original screenplay (Simon Beaufoy).

The movie has won critical acclaim from top critics worldwide including Rogert Erbert, Peter Travers of the coveted magazine, Rolling Stones, Lu Lumenik and Richard Coliss, amongst others. Amongst the most coveted of awards, it has already bagged the pre-Oscars or the first major award of the Oscar season and the best film award from the National Board for the Review of Motion Picture.

Danny Boyle was critically acclaimed for his earlier projects too, like ‘Train spotting’, ‘Beaches’ and ’28 Days Later’. He has yet again made a mark for himself by providing us with an example of unequalled directorial excellence in the movie. Slum dog Millionaire is now bringing him fame, respect and admiration from top critics and the audience; it has earned him enormous popularity and critical acclaim.

Indian music director and composer A.R.Rahman, who is the 8th best-selling artist in the world, has provided the movie with Bollywood-type music that is essential to the story; the story has been set in India and shot extensively in the Indian cities of Mumbai and Agra. The film includes the famous ‘choli ke pechhey kya hai’ song from the film Khalnaayak and Aaj ki Raatfrom Don amongst others.
Not only the movie, performance and direction but also the music is being appraised by critics and the audience. The fun and the frolic associated with the Indian music industry are liked by everyone the world over.

In a blog, a music writer, Drake Lelane, describes the music in Slum dog Millionaireas ‘an intoxicating mix of old and new India, juxtaposing classic Indian instrumentation with big beats and hip-hop synth sounds’. A.R. Rahman has already made a mark for himself in the global music industry by scoring music for international movies like Elizabeth, theGolden Age and the musical, Bombay Dreams. This movie and the nomination are surely going to open new avenues and opportunities for our talented musician. It is time he got what he deserved. I am sure that with the best wishes of his fans, his devotion and the uniqueness that he has brought to the global music industry, he will win the prestigious award. Keep your fingers crossed.
